Whew! What a year this has turned out to be.  This was only our second year of showing and we jumped in with both feet.  We decided to add performance classes to this year’s entries.  The idea was to find a donkey that had been trained and had a little experience in some in-hand classes that we were interested in and take it slow, maybe entering a few trail and jumping classes.

Our search was underway. In May, we found the perfect donkey.  And boy was she trained well.  Kathy Schmitt’s donkey Chloe had been retired after winning the 2011 National Hi-Point Jennet Championship title.  Kathy was now showing Zephyr so Chloe no longer had a job and was hanging out at Peace Pipe Ranch with her trainer Bobbie Ferraro.  We headed to Texas to check her out.  Chloe was a dream.  She backed, she side-passed, she did everything the trail offered.  It was exciting.  We knew she was exactly what we were looking for.  Next, Bobbie hitched her up.  I tried to explain we were not interested in DRIVING her.  Our plan was to take it slow.  Well they were having none of that!  So, I jumped in the cart and off we went.  Chloe was outstanding.  I started thinking that maybe I could in fact do this.  I was told “YES, do it all.  No one will know you haven’t done this before.”

Kathy agreed to let us “lease” Chloe for a year to decide if we were really going to follow through with this performance stuff (and to give her time to decide if she was really ready to let her go).  Well I’m happy to say we did it! We entered ALL the performance classes and loved every minute of it.  Especially the driving classes!  So we are very happy to announce that Chloe now has a new home with us.  She will be here forever.

We started off our show season just a week after bringing Chloe home by hosting a “Show Clinic” by Wayne Lyon.  Wayne spent the weekend teaching our group of rookies and newcomers the basics of showing.  We had a great time and learned much.  The first show was the River Valley Mule and Donkey show in Clarksville just a week after the clinic.  Most of our group entered the show and all did very well. From there it was on to Shelbyville in July.  Ozark Empire in Springfield was next with Chloe winning Champion Jennet, Reserve Champion and Reserve Hi-Point, then the Kansas and Oklahoma shows. Chloe won Hi-Point Champion in Kansas!!!! It was a great season.
